==Etymology== The official name of the state is Veracruz de Ignacio de la Llave. It is named after its largest city and main port, Veracruz, originally founded as Villa Rica de la Vera Cruz<ref>{{Cite web |title=Veracruz - 7 Wonders |url=https://7wonders.org/north-america/mexico/veracruz/ |access-date=2025-04-27 |website=7wonders.org |language=en-US}}</ref> (Rich Town of the True Cross) by Spanish conquistadors in 1519. The name "Vera Cruz" combines Latin and Spanish elements meaning "True Cross".<ref>{{Cite web |title=What does Veracruz mean? |url=https://www.definitions.net/definition/Veracruz |access-date=2025-04-27 |website=www.definitions.net}}</ref> The suffix is in honor of [[Ignacio de la Llave|Ignacio de la Llave y Segura Zevallos]] (1818β1863), who was the governor of Veracruz from 1855 to 1857<ref name="Municipal">{{Cite web |last=Municipal |first=Instituto Nacional para el Federalismo y el Desarrollo |title=Ignacio de la Llave: natalicio e historia |url=https://www.gob.mx/inafed/articulos/conmemoramos-el-natalicio-de-general-del-ejercito-y-como-gobernador-del-estado-de-veracruz-ignacio-de-la-llave |access-date=2025-04-27 |website=gob.mx |language=es}}</ref> and once again from 1861 to 1863.<ref name="Municipal" /> The state's official seal, adopted in 1954 by the state legislature through Law No. 92,<ref name="Escudo">{{Cite web |title=Escudo de Veracruz |url=https://paratodomexico.com/estados-de-mexico/estado-veracruz/escudo-veracruz.html |access-date=2025-04-27 |website=paratodomexico.com |language=es}}</ref> is based on the colonial coat of arms granted by King Charles I of Spain to Villa Rica de la Vera Cruz in 1523, recognizing it as the first Spanish settlement in New Spain.<ref name="Escudo" />
