==Geography== Varna is in eastern Marshall County, northeast of the intersection of Illinois Routes [[Illinois Route 17|17]] and [[Illinois Route 89|89]]. IL 89 passes through the west side of the village as Pine Street, leading north {{convert|6|mi|0}} to [[Magnolia, Illinois|Magnolia]] and south {{convert|4|mi|0}} to [[La Rose, Illinois|La Rose]]. IL 17 runs along the southern border of the village, about half a mile south of the village center; it leads west {{convert|9|mi|0}} to [[Lacon, Illinois|Lacon]], the Marshall [[county seat]], and east {{convert|11|mi|0}} to [[Wenona, Illinois|Wenona]]. According to the [[U.S. Census Bureau]], Varna has a total area of {{convert|0.30|sqmi|sqkm|2}}, all land.<ref name="CenPopGazetteer2022"/> The village is drained to the west by tributaries of Shaw Creek and to the east by a tributary of Sandy Creek, part of the [[Illinois River]] watershed. {{convert|3|mi|0}} northwest of Varna and within the village's postal zone is the {{convert|1400|acre|adj=on}} [[gated community]] of Lake Wildwood, which was developed in the 1970s around a [[man-made]] {{convert|220|acre|adj=on}} lake on Shaw Creek.<ref>{{cite web| url=http://www.lakelubbers.com/lake-wildwood-2045/| title=Lake Wildwood, Illinois, USA| website=lakelubbers.com| access-date=February 28, 2023}}</ref> In September 2015, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency completed a watershed management project to stabilize the source water of Shaw Creek and prevent natural sediment from entering the watershed.<ref>{{cite web|title=2015 Biannual Report|url=http://www.epa.illinois.gov/Assets/iepa/water-quality/watershed-management/biannual/biannual-report.pdf|website=www.epa.illinois.gov|publisher=Environmental Protection Agency|page=67|access-date=April 29, 2017}}</ref>
