Van Alstyne was built in 1873, for settlers to be near the railroad stop of the [[Houston and Texas Central Railway]].<ref name="Van Alstyne, Texas">{{cite web| url=https://tshaonline.org/handbook/online/articles/hjv02|title= Van Alstyne, Texas|publisher= Texas State Historical Association |access-date=July 27, 2012}}</ref> The town was named for Marie Van Alstyne, a shareholder in the railroad company.<ref>{{cite web| url= http://www.epodunk.com/cgi-bin/genInfo.php?locIndex=67779|title= Profile for Van Alstyne, Texas, TX|publisher=ePodunk|access-date=July 27, 2012}}</ref>

The town was incorporated September 11, 1883.<ref name="Van Alstyne, Texas"/>

In May 2022, the citizens overwhelmingly passed a resolution approving the first city charter making Van Alstyne a Texas home rule city.   Van Alstyne is a council/manager form of government with a mayor and 6 city council members each elected at large by place to three year terms.
