==Background==
Joyce first encountered the figure of [[Odysseus|Odysseus/Ulysses]] in [[Charles Lamb]]'s ''[[Charles Lamb#Selected works|Adventures of Ulysses]]'', an adaptation of ''[[The Odyssey]]'' for children, which seems to have established the Latin name in Joyce's mind.
