The phrase originates from the [[Sermon on the Mount]] in the [[New Testament]]. In the [[Gospel of Matthew]] [[Matthew 5|chapter 5]], an alternative for "[[eye for an eye|an eye for an eye]]" is given by [[Jesus]]:
