== Etymology ==
The name of Totowa comes from the [[Native Americans in the United States|Native American]] name for the [[Passaic Falls|Great Falls]] of the [[Passaic River]] in nearby [[Paterson, New Jersey|Paterson]], and literally means "sinking or falling water", or "between mountains and water".<ref>Chadwick, A.
