== Early life ==

Before Dalton's fourth birthday, the family moved back to England to [[Belper]] in [[Derbyshire]], where he attended Herbert Strutt [[Grammar schools in the United Kingdom|Grammar School]]. As a teenager, he was a member of the [[Air Training Corps]] at LXX (Croft & Culcheth) Squadron.

He decided to become an actor at 16 after seeing a production of ''[[Macbeth]]'' and got a role in a production of the play at [[The Old Vic]].<ref name= "BlackwellInternation1990">{{cite book| last=Blackwell|first=Earl|title=Earl Blackwell's Celebrity Register| url=https://books.google.com/books?id=t96p_1d8m_IC| year= 1990| publisher= Gale Research Incorporated|isbn=978-0-8103-6875-0|page=107}}</ref> He left school in 1962 at 16 to enroll in the [[Royal Academy of Dramatic Art]] and tour with the [[National Youth Theatre]].
