==History== The present site of Springdale was a wilderness until about 1886, when Mr. John Shriner and Mr. Charles O. Squire arrived at about the same time. Squire erected the first sawmill in 1887.<ref name="ReferenceA">History of Springdale as compiled by Mrs. B. V. Fleming and Mrs. C. O. Snapp)</ref> Once Mr. Squire finalized his homestead,<ref>http://www.glorecords.blm.gov record WASPAA 013344</ref> he platted the area on November 29, 1889, which he called Squire City. He became the first postmaster in December 1889 and named the town "Squires City."<ref>FamilySearch.com Washington State Postmaster Indexes, Prior to 1965, Stevens County, page 423</ref> Mark P. Sheffer was the first merchant. He brought in material by horse-drawn freight wagons prior to the arrival on the railroad.<ref name="ReferenceA"/> In 1889, the [[Spokane Falls & Northern Railway]] (SF&N) was completed to the area and the depot was called Springdale.<ref name="ReferenceA"/> Springdale was the lunch stop between [[Spokane, Washington|Spokane]] and [[Northport, Washington|Northport]] on the SF&NRR.<ref>Map of the Spokane Falls & Northern Railway August 15, 1890</ref> Sometime before 1892, residents petitioned to have the town's name changed to "Springdale." While the exact reason for this is unknown, the town is built over a series of subterranean streams, many of which emerge from the ground as [[Spring (hydrology)|springs]].<ref name="Hitchman">{{Cite book |last=Hitchman |first=Robert |title=Place Names of Washington |publisher=[[Washington State Historical Society]] |year=1985 |isbn=0-917048-57-1 |pages=286}}</ref> Springdale was officially incorporated on February 9, 1903.<ref>{{cite web | url=http://www.mrsc.org/cityprofiles/cityprofile.aspx?id=219 | title=MRSC - Washington City and Town Profiles }}</ref> The Springdale Reformer, started by Elmer Burrows, was published from 1907 to 1923.<ref>Washington State Library Newspapers http://www.sos.wa.gov/library</ref> The entire business section of Springdale was destroyed by fire, July 9, 1908.
