==Etymology== The Hebrew noun ''岣tat'' ("sin") comes from the verb 岣ta (讞指讟指讗) basically meaning "to miss the mark, to err".<ref name="JSB-202">{{cite book|last1=Berlin|first1=Adele|last2=Brettler|first2=Marc Zvi|title=Jewish study bible|date=2014|publisher=Oxford University Press|location=[S.l.]|isbn=978-0199978465|pages=202|edition=2 Rev ed. (November 2014)|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=yErYBAAAQBAJ&q=burnt+offering&pg=PT2|access-date=1 April 2016}}</ref> The first use is in the sentence "(..) Sin couches at the door; Its urge is toward you, Yet you can be its master"<ref name="JSB-17">{{cite book|last1=Berlin|first1=Adele|last2=Brettler|first2=Marc Zvi|title=Jewish study bible|date=2014|publisher=Oxford University Press|location=[S.l.]|isbn=978-0199978465|pages=17|edition=2 Rev ed. The noun ''岣tat'' can mean "sin," or also by [[metonymy]] in phrases such as "the bullock ... it is sin," or "a bullock for a sin, for atonement": it can also stand for purification offering. The high priest was instructed to "...lay his hand upon the head of the purification offering [''rosh ha-岣tat'' 专止讗砖讈 讛址纸讞址讟指旨讗转], and the purification offering shall be slaughtered at the place of the burnt offering" (Leviticus 4:29).<ref name="JSB-203">{{cite book|last1=Berlin|first1=Adele|last2=Brettler|first2=Marc Zvi|title=Jewish study bible|date=2014|publisher=Oxford University Press|location=[S.l.]|isbn=978-0199978465|pages=203|edition=2 Rev ed.
