==Personal life==
The son of [[Chartered Surveyor|chartered surveyor]] John Brett and Margaret (née Lee), a teacher,<ref>Twelve Englishmen of Mystery, ed. Earl F. He was educated at [[Dulwich College]] and [[Wadham College, Oxford]], where he gained a first-class honours degree in English. He is married with three children and lives in [[Arundel]], West Sussex, England.

Brett was the president of the [[Detection Club]] from 2000 to 2015. He was appointed Officer of the [[Order of the British Empire]] (OBE) in the [[2016 New Year Honours]] for services to literature.<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=61450|supp=y|page=N11|date=30 December 2015}}</ref>
