==Early life==
Sheldon Allan Silverstein was born in [[Chicago]] on September 25, 1930.<ref>{{Cite news |last=Ted Merwin |date=April 28, 2014 |title=Dancing to Shel Silverstein |work=The New York Jewish Week |url=http://www.thejewishweek.com/news/short-takes/dancing-shel-silverstein |access-date=December 15, 2015}}</ref> His father, Nathan, was an immigrant from Eastern Europe of Jewish ancestry, and his mother, Helen, was born in Chicago.
