==History== The first coal mines in Seymour were opened in 1884. In 1902, the [[Numa, Iowa|Numa]] Block Coal Company took over these mines.<ref>James H. Lees, History of Coal Mining in Iowa, Chapter III of [https://books.google.com/books?id=1BUMAAAAYAAJ&lpg=PA540&pg=PA540 Annual Report, 1908], Iowa Geological Survey, 1909, page 540.</ref> In 1908, the largest coal mine in Appanoose-Wayne Coalfield was Numa Block number 2, known as "Big Jim." "Big Jim" was located just {{convert|1|mi}} east of the [[Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway]] Depot, and was able to produce 100,000 tons of coal per year at full capacity. The [[Mystic, Iowa|Mystic]] coal seam was just over {{convert|2|ft}} thick here, reached by a {{convert|202|ft|m|adj=mid|-long}} shaft.
