European settlement of the area that is now Saddle River traces back to 1675, when the [[Lenape]] [[Native Americans in the United States|Native Americans]] sold a stretch of land along the Saddle River to Albert Zabriskie.<ref>[https://www.saddleriver.org/history History], Borough of Saddle River. The borough is named after the [[Saddle River (Passaic River)|Saddle River]], which flows through the borough and is a [[tributary]] of the [[Passaic River]], which in turn was named for a stream and valley in [[Saddell]], [[Argyll]], Scotland.<ref>Hutchinson, Viola L.
