Rushford Village was first organized as Rushford Township.<ref>{{cite book|last=Willford|first=William|title=History of Fillmore County, Minnesota|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=Dlg0AQAAMAAJ&pg=PA250|year=1912|publisher=H.C. Cooper, Jr.|page=250}}</ref> As a township, it was organized in 1858, and named after [[Rush Creek (Root River)|Rush Creek]].<ref>{{cite book|last=Upham|first=Warren|author-link=Warren Upham|title=Minnesota Geographic Names: Their Origin and Historic Significance|url=https://archive.org/details/minnesotageogra00uphagoog|year=1920|publisher=Minnesota Historical Society|page=[https://archive.org/details/minnesotageogra00uphagoog/page/n213 194]}}</ref> During this period the [[Rushford, Minnesota|City of Rushford]] incorporated as a city, so it became a separate municipal entity from Rushford Township. On July 18, 1885, Rushford Township incorporated as a village and in 1909 the village of [[Peterson, Minnesota|Peterson]] (completely surrounded by Rushford Village) also incorporated as a village.
