The name ''Roxolani'' is generally interpreted as a [[Compound (linguistics)|compound]] formed with the [[Alanic language|Alanic]] root *{{Lang|xln-Latn|rox-}} (modern [[Ossetian language|Ossetian]] {{transliteration|os|rūxs}} or {{transliteration|os|roxs}} 'light, luminous'; [[Avestan]] {{Lang|ae-latn|raox-šna-}} and [[Persian language|Persian]] {{Lang|fa-Latn|rošan}}, 'luminous, shining') attached to the tribal name ''Alān''. Historian [[George Vernadsky]] suggested that the ''Rocas'' (or ''Rogas''), a tribe conquered by the [[Ostrogoths]] in the 4th century, may be a corruption of ''Ruxs-As.''
