==Early life==
The only child of [[Ron Barassi, Sr.]], Barassi was born in the central Victorian town of [[Castlemaine, Victoria|Castlemaine]] on 27 February 1936.<ref name="obituary">{{cite news |newspaper=The Age |title=Ron Barassi was the face of football and his legacy lives on |first=Greg |last=Baum |date=16 September 2023 |url=https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/ron-barassi-was-the-face-of-football-and-his-legacy-lives-on-20211108-p596zt.html |access-date=16 September 2023}}</ref> The following year, his father moved to Melbourne to play [[Australian Football League|VFL]] football with the [[Melbourne Football Club]].
