==History== Rolla was laid out in 1888 in part of Edward Owen's [[Homestead (buildings)|homestead]].<ref name="Star">{{cite news | url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=YcRkAAAAIBAJ&sjid=loYNAAAAIBAJ&pg=609%2C3700595 | title=Explain Origin of All County Towns | work=Turtle Mountain Star | date=September 5, 1940 | access-date=May 2, 2015 | pages=7}}</ref> The origin of the name Rolla is disputed, but there are three main theories. It was either derived from a contraction of the county name, which was coined by Dr. Richard D. Cowan, a local physician, it was named after Arthur Noyes's brother, Rolla, or it was named after Rolla, Missouri.<ref>{{cite book |last1=Williams |first1=Mary Anne (Barnes) |title=Origins of North Dakota Place Names |date=January 1, 1961 |publisher=Bismarck Tribune |page=272 |access-date=}}</ref><ref>{{cite book|author=Federal Writers' Project|author-link=Federal Writers' Project|title=North Dakota, a Guide to the Northern Prairie State|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=dCGVnMUdNqMC&pg=PA236|year=1938|publisher=WPA|isbn=978-1-62376-033-5|page=236}}</ref> A post office has been in operation in Rolla since 1888.<ref>{{cite web | url=http://www.postalhistory.com/postoffices.asp?task=display&state=ND&county=Rolette | title=Rolette County | publisher=Jim Forte Postal History | access-date=February 14, 2015}}</ref> In 1890, it was made the county seat, and in the year following on April 21 it was officially a village.
