==Etymology== The probable origin of the name was [[Common Brittonic|Brittonic]] ''Dānā'', from a root ''dān-'', meaning "water" or "river".<ref>{{cite book|last=Smith|first=A. H.|author-link=Albert Hugh Smith|title=The Place-names of the West Riding of Yorkshire|volume=7|publisher=Cambridge University Press|year=1962|page=126}}</ref> The name [[Dôn]] (or [[Danu (Irish goddess)|Danu]]), a [[Celtic mythology|Celtic]] mother goddess, has the same origin. The river gave its name to the [[Don River (Ontario)|Don River]], one of the principal rivers of [[Toronto]], Ontario, Canada.
