==Early life==
Bach was born in [[Oak Park, Illinois]], to Roland R. and Ruth Shaw Bach. His father was an American Red Cross chapter manager.<ref>Science Fiction and Fantasy Literature, vol. 2, R. Bach's first airplane flight occurred at age 14, when his mother was campaigning for a seat on the council of [[Long Beach, California]].
