==Etymology== Reston, Virginia was named after and by its founder, Robert E. Simon, who purchased a large tract of land in western Fairfax County in 1961. Simon, having recently sold his family’s share in Carnegie Hall, used the funds to acquire the property with the intention of developing a planned community. The name "Reston" is derived from Simon's initials, "R.E.S.," combined with theplace-name suffix "-ton." This led to the name Reston being associated with the surrounding area. Simon decided to launch Reston on April 10, 1964 which was also his 50th birthday. Reston became the first planned community created within the United States. Reston was conceived as a suburban development that integrated residential, commercial, and recreational spaces, with a goal of preserving open spaces and natural landscapes. The name "Reston" reflects Simon's personal connection to the project while also following the common American naming practice of using a founder's initials combined with a place-name suffix. As the community grew, the name Reston came to represent both the development itself and the seven principles it was founded on. Reston’s growth over time , like many modern American suburbs, evolved from private landholdings and expanded infrastructure, including roads, railways, and later, technology hubs. Its growth was influenced by its proximity to Washington, D.C., and the integration of both residential and commercial spaces, with a focus on preserving green spaces and creating a diverse suburban community.
