The first settlers in Ramsey were [[Thomas A. Holmes]] and [[James Beatty (Minnesota pioneer)|James Beatty]], who built the Old Log Trading Post in 1849.<ref>{{cite web |last1=Atwood |first1=George |title=The Old Village of Itaska |url=https://mncollections.org/Detail/objects/54073 |publisher=Anoka County Historical Society |access-date=20 February 2023}}</ref> [[Itasca Village]] was platted in 1852. The village contained the first post office in [[Anoka County, Minnesota|Anoka County]] and a station on the [[Northern Pacific Railway|Northern Pacific Railroad]].<ref>{{cite book |last1=Berthel |first1=Mary |title=Horns of Thunder |date=June 1948 |publisher=Minnesota Historical Society Press |isbn=9780873515184 |page=116 |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=RR2dDm60emIC |access-date=4 February 2023}}</ref> Itasca Village was abandoned soon after the removal of the Winnebago Indians in the area. In 1857 the first [[township]], Watertown, was created.
