According to the Government of Canada, the Government of Quebec, and the Geographical Names Board of Canada, the names of Canadian cities and towns have only one official form. In French, the two are distinguished in that province names including Quebec generally take [[definite article]]s, while city names do not. The [[Algonquian people]] had originally named the area {{lang|alq|Kébec}}, an [[Algonquin language|Algonquin]]{{efn|The [[Algonquin language]] is a distinct language of the [[Algonquian languages|Algonquian language family]], and is not a misspelling.}} word meaning "where the river narrows", because the [[Saint Lawrence River]] narrows by the [[promontory of Quebec]] and its [[Cap Diamant|Cape Diamant]].
