Most [[MRI]] research was focused broadly on the basal ganglia as a whole, for reasons such as poor resolution or hemorrhage within the putamen. Later studies  have focused on the basal ganglia and relevant brain-behavior relationships. In the 1970s, the first [[single-unit recording]]s were carried out with [[monkey]]s, monitoring [[pallidal]] [[neuronal]] activity related to movement. Since then, more extensive [[neuronal tracing]], stimulation, and imaging research methods including [[functional MRI]], and [[diffusion weighted  MRI]] that allow for investigation of the putamen have been developed.
