In 1986, he graduated from the secondary school ''Eerste Vrijzinnig Christelijk Lyceum'' in [[The Hague]].<ref name="royalhouse"/> From 1986 until 1988, he studied mechanical engineering at the [[University of California, Berkeley]].<ref name="royalhouse"/> From 1988 he studied at [[Delft University of Technology]], where he obtained an [[engineer's degree]] in [[aeronautical engineering]] in 1994.
