Incorporated by Governor [[Benning Wentworth]] in 1764 and settled in 1768, the town takes its name from Italy's [[Piedmont]]. Aaron Lane, who grew up in Piermont, was the first permanent settler in the [[Mojave Desert]] area now known as [[Victorville, California]].
