== Etymology ==

During his 1542 expedition, Spanish explorer [[Ruy López de Villalobos]] named the islands of [[Leyte]] and [[Samar]] "{{lang|es|Felipinas}}" after the [[Prince of Asturias]], later [[Philip&nbsp;II of Castile]].
