In 1888, [[Friedrich Reinitzer]], an Austrian plant scientist observed [[cholesteryl benzoate]] had two different melting points. In 1909, [[Leo Baekeland|Leo Hendrik Baekeland]] invented [[bakelite]] made from [[phenol]] and [[formaldehyde]].
