==History== For centuries, the land that is now Pendleton was the territory of the [[Cherokee]] nation.<ref name=Badder>{{cite book| last=Badder| first=Hurley| title=Remembering South Carolina's Old Pendleton District| year=2006| publisher=History Press| location=Charleston, SC| pages=13–27| isbn=9781596291973| url=https://books.google.com/books?id=MXH-3t-zStUC}}</ref> After [[England]] claimed South Carolina as a colony, the Cherokee traded with the British.<ref name=Badder/> After the Cherokee lost the war of 1759β60 against the British, the British dominated trade in the region and began to settle more of the land with large farms.<ref name=Badder /> [[Andrew Pickens (congressman)|Andrew Pickens]], who was a general in the [[American Revolutionary War|Revolutionary War]] moved to the area and commissioned the [[Pendleton District, South Carolina|District of Pendleton]] in 1790.<ref name=Badder /> During the first half of the 1800s, wealthy families built homes in Pendleton. These homes were built as a summer vacation spot for the low-country plantation owners. Charles Cotesworth Pinckney (1789–1865) built Woodburn Plantation in 1830. Later, the Adger family, a wealthy family from Charleston, expanded the plantation to over {{convert|1000|acre}} and enlarged the house to over 18 rooms.<ref name=PendletonHistoric>{{cite web| title=Pendleton Historic Foundation| url=http://www.pendletonhistoricfoundation.org/}}</ref> The [[Ashtabula (Pendleton, South Carolina)|Ashtabula]], [[Boone-Douthit House]], [[Faith Cabin Library at Anderson County Training School]], [[Pendleton Historic District (Pendleton, South Carolina)|Pendleton Historic District]], and [[Woodburn (Pendleton, South Carolina)|Woodburn]] are listed on the [[National Register of Historic Places]].<ref name="nris">{{NRISref|version=2010a}}</ref>
