Pataskala was laid out in 1851 when the railroad was extended to that point.<ref>{{cite book|last=Brister|first=Edwin M. Pataskala was originally called Conine Town,<ref name=":0">{{Cite news |date=15 October 1852 |title=Post-Office Operations |pages=5 |work=The New York Times |url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/106932819/ |access-date=29 August 2022}}</ref> after an early settler of the area, Richard Conine, and his wife Sarah (Van Dorn) Conine.<ref name=":1">{{Cite book |url=https://cdm16802.contentdm.oclc.org/digital/collection/genealogy/id/55422 |title=People Make the Difference, Licking County, Ohio: Townships of Etna, Harrison, Jersey, Lima, Pataskala |publisher=[S.I.] Southwestern Licking County Communities Bicentennial Planning Committee |year=1976 |location=Licking County, Ohio |pages=VII-2 |language=en}}</ref> Born in New Jersey, the Conines purchased over 2000 acres in Lima Township, permanently settling in the area in 1821.<ref name=":1" /> Conine had sold most of his land by 1850, and in 1851 he laid out plots for Conine Town.<ref name=":1" /> Another early settler, Jess Stoneman Green, who had purchased much of Conine's property, likewise laid out and sold lots in 1852.<ref name=":1" /> The name was changed to Pataskala in 1852.<ref name=":0" />
