The word "parsley" is a merger of [[Old English]]'' {{Lang|ang|petersilie}}'' (which is identical to the contemporary [[German language|German]] word for parsley: {{Lang|de|Petersilie}}) and the [[Old French]] ''{{Lang|fro|peresil}}''.
