An oil spill creates an immediate risk of negative effects on human health, including respiratory and reproductive problems as well as liver and immune-system damage. Oil spills also affect the everyday lives of humans through secondary consequences such as increased fire hazards and the potential closure of beaches, parks, and fisheries. Spilled oil can also contaminate drinking water supplies. Contamination can have an economic impact on tourism and [[Marine resource extraction (disambiguation)|marine resource extraction]] industries. For example, the ''Deepwater Horizon'' oil spill impacted beach tourism and [[fishing industry|fishing]] along the [[Gulf Coast]], and the responsible parties were required to compensate economic victims.
