== History == [[Image:Monument, Nottingham Square, NH.jpg|thumb|left|Revolutionary War monument, Nottingham Square]] [[Image:Nottingham_NH_Recycling_Center.jpg|thumb|left|Oldest continuously operated recycling center in the US, Nottingham, NH]] Incorporated in 1722 by Lieutenant Governor [[John Wentworth (lieutenant governor, born 1671)|John Wentworth]], Nottingham was named for [[Daniel Finch, 2nd Earl of Nottingham]]. The earl was a close friend of [[Samuel Shute]] and [[Joseph Dudley]], previous colonial governors of [[Province of New Hampshire|New Hampshire]]. Among the grantees was Peregrine White, descendant of [[Peregrine White]] of the ''[[Mayflower]]'', the first child of [[English people|English]] parentage born in [[New England]].<ref>{{cite book |last1=Haulley |first1=Fletcher |title=A Primary Source History of the Colony of New Hampshire |date=2005 |publisher=Rosen Publishing Group |isbn=1404204296 |page=5}}</ref> At one time, the town had 17 [[watermill]]s in operation.
