==History== Nora was named by a railroad official for a female settler.<ref>{{cite book|author=Chicago and North Western Railway Company|title=A History of the Origin of the Place Names Connected with the Chicago & North Western and Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis & Omaha Railways|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=OspBAQAAMAAJ&pg=PA107|year=1908|page=107}}</ref> According to another source, the name "Nora" was selected on account of its brevity, Nora being a quite small place.<ref>{{cite book|title=Illinois Central Magazine|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=3WI3AQAAMAAJ&pg=PT48|year=1922|publisher=Illinois Central Railroad Company|page=43}}</ref> Nora Elementary School (whose athletic nickname was the Navahos) was a fixture of the town for years. In the early 1980s consolidation led to the school's closure and it was converted to apartments. Until the 1960s the town had a grocery store run by Belle Lutter, who claimed to have ridden Ulysses S. Grant's horse as a girl.{{citation needed|date=June 2024}}
