The town was used as a meeting place for the Iroquois Great Council, and English and American traders called it Newcomer's town.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.ohiohistorycentral.org/entry.php?rec=770&nm=Newcomerstown-Ohio|title=Newcomerstown, Ohio - Ohio History Central|work=ohiohistorycentral.org|access-date=December 9, 2014}}</ref> By 1771, more than one hundred dwellings had been built. In 1776, more than seven hundred Lenape and several traders lived in the town.<ref>[https://ohiohistorycentral.org/w/Newcomerstown,_Ohio "Newcomerstown, Ohio," ''Ohio History Central'']</ref> Soon after the start of the [[American Revolutionary War]], the Lenape moved west to [[Coshocton, Ohio|Coshocton]].<ref>[http://www.ohiohistorycentral.org/entry.php?rec=770 History of Newcomerstown, Ohio], Ohio History, accessed March 19, 2010</ref>
