== Etymology ==
The indigenous [[Munsee language|Munsee]] term for the southern tip of the island was [[Manhattoe]], and variations of this name were also applied to the first Dutch settlement there. With the construction of [[Fort Amsterdam]], the town also became variously known as "Amsterdam" or "New Amsterdam". New Amsterdam's city limits did not extend north of the [[Wall Street#Early years|wall of Wall Street]], and neither the remainder of the island of Manhattan nor of wider New Netherland fell under its definition.{{citation needed|date=March 2023}}
