The first name of the place was Clarkstown, a name it retained until 1856 when, at the suggestion of James De Clark, the present name was given by [[Munsee people|Munsee]] Chief (Nannawitt).<ref>{{cite book |page=[https://archive.org/details/historyrockland00greegoog <!-- quote=nanuet. --> 422] |title=The History of Rockland County |author=Frank Bertangue Green |date=1886 |editor=A.S. The [[Erie Railroad]] arrived in Rockland County in 1841 along its original [[Main line (railway)|main line]] to [[Piermont, New York|Piermont]].
