==Early life and education== Paik was born in [[Keijō]] ([[Seoul]]), [[Korea under Japanese rule|Korea, Empire of Japan]] in 1932. He was the youngest of three brothers and two sisters. His {{ill|Paik Naksŭng|ko|백낙승 (1886년)|lt=father}}, who in 2002 was revealed to be a [[Korean collaborators with Imperial Japan|Korean who collaborated with the Japanese]] during the latter's occupation of Korea, owned a major textile manufacturing firm. As he was growing up, he was trained as a [[classical pianist]].
