==History == The area historically was inhabited by the [[Matinecock (tribe)|Matinecock]] Native Americans, and European colonists began to settle in the area during the 1600s.<ref name=":81" /> During colonial times, the area was used to raise sheep for wool and meat.<ref name=":81">{{Cite book|last=Winsche|first=Richard|title=The History of Nassau County Community Place-Names|date=October 1, 1999|publisher=Empire State Books|isbn=978-1557871541|location=[[Interlaken, New York]]|pages=}}</ref> Muttontown incorporated as a village in 1931.<ref name=":81" /> The name of the village stems from its former use as pasturage for sheep.<ref name=":81" /> [[Zog of Albania]] bought the local [[Knollwood estate|Knollwood Estate]] in 1951, but sold it in 1955.
