They were developed during the [[Austronesian Expansion]] (c. 3000 to 1500 BC) which allowed Austronesians to colonize [[maritime Southeast Asia]], [[Micronesia]], [[Island Melanesia]], [[Madagascar]], and [[Polynesia]].
