Mound Valley was founded in 1869. The first post office in Mound Valley was established in May 1870.<ref>{{cite web | url=http://www.kshs.org/geog/geog_postoffices/search/page:1/county:LB | title=Kansas Post Offices, 1828-1961 | publisher=Kansas Historical Society | accessdate=12 June 2014}}</ref> Mound Valley was incorporated as a city in 1871.<ref>{{cite book | url=https://archive.org/details/bub_gb_Qi9cXyTWt9EC | title=Kansas: A Cyclopedia of State History, Volume 2 | publisher=Standard Publishing Company | author=Blackmar, Frank Wilson | year=1912 | pages=[https://archive.org/details/bub_gb_Qi9cXyTWt9EC/page/n320 330]}}</ref>  The town was a stop on the [[Missouri-Kansas-Texas]] railroad line from 1886 until the 1970s, and was also served by the [[St. Louis–San Francisco Railway|Frisco Railroad]] and is currently served by the [[South Kansas and Oklahoma Railroad]], which operates on the Frisco's former tracks.
