==Geography==

The Mostaganem Plateau covers eleven municipalities in the southern part of the province: Mostaganem, [[Ain Tedles]], [[Sour, Algeria|Sour]], [[Bouguirat]], [[Sirat, Algeria|Sirat]], [[Souaflia]], [[Mesra]], [[Ain Sidi Cherif]], [[Mansourah]], [[Touahria]] and [[Sayada, Algeria|Sayada]].<ref name=monographie>{{Cite book |title= Monographie de la wilaya de Mostaganem |url=http://www.andi.gov.dz/fr/PDF/MONOGRAPHIE/Mostaganem.pdf |pages=2–3 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120111143831/http://www.andi.gov.dz/fr/PDF/MONOGRAPHIE/Mostaganem.pdf |archive-date=11 January 2012}}</ref> It is a semi-arid and sandy plateau, in the shape of a triangle and bounded to the north by the Chelif River.<ref name=guide>{{Cite book|last=Côte|first=Marc|title=Guide d'Algérie : paysages et patrimoine|publisher=Média-Plus|year=1996|isbn=9961-922-00-X|location=Algeria|pages=319}}</ref> It receives 350&nbsp;mm of rainfall per year.<ref name=monographie/>

During [[French Algeria|French colonization]], [[viticulture]] was introduced on the plateau.<ref name=guide/> After the country's independence, it was replaced by irrigated [[market garden]]ing and the culture of citrus fruits and cereals.<ref name=guide/> However, in certain sectors east of Mostaganem, the replacement of the vineyards caused the appearance of small dunes as a consequence of the resumption of soil movement.<ref name=guide/>
