==Etymology== [[File:Moped old.jpg|thumb|The original moped – a bicycle equipped with an engine]] The word ''moped'' was coined by the Swedish journalist Harald Nielsen in 1952, as a [[portmanteau]] of the Swedish words {{lang|sv|motor}} and {{lang|sv|pedaler}}.
