== Geography == It is formed in [[Glacier County, Montana|Glacier County]] in northwestern Montana, {{convert|21|mi|km}} north of [[Browning, Montana]], by the confluence of its South and Middle forks. The {{convert|30|mi|km|adj=on}} long South Fork and {{convert|20|mi|km|adj=on}} long Middle Fork both rise in the [[Rocky Mountains]] just east of [[Glacier National Park (U.S.)|Glacier National Park]], in the [[Blackfeet Indian Reservation]]. {{citation needed|date=March 2016}} Much of the water in the North Fork is diverted from the [[St. Mary River (Alberta-Montana)|St. Mary River]] through a canal and [[inverted siphon]].<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.usbr.gov/projects/Project.jsp?proj_Name=Milk+River+Project |title=Milk River Project |publisher=[[Milk River Watershed Council Canada]] |access-date=2017-10-16 |archive-date=2012-02-26 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120226164512/http://www.usbr.gov/projects/Project.jsp?proj_Name=Milk+River+Project |url-status=dead }}</ref> The main stream flows east-northeast into southern Alberta, where it is joined by the [[North Fork of the Milk River]], from there It flows past the town of [[Milk River, Alberta|Milk River]] and [[Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park]], then turns southeast into Montana, running east along the north side of the [[Sweetgrass Hills]], turning south, passing through the [[Fresno Dam]], then east past [[Havre, Montana|Havre]] and along the north side of the [[Fort Belknap Indian Reservation]]. Near [[Malta, Montana|Malta]], it turns north, then southeast, flowing past [[Glasgow, Montana|Glasgow]] and joining the Missouri in [[Valley County, Montana]], {{convert|5|mi|km|0}} downstream from [[Fort Peck Dam]]. {{citation needed|date=March 2016}} The watershed of the river extends into the Canadian provinces of Alberta and [[Saskatchewan]] and the US state of Montana.
