==Early life==
Ende was born 12 November 1929 in [[Garmisch-Partenkirchen|Garmisch]], [[Bavaria]], the only child of the [[surrealism|surrealist]] painter [[Edgar Ende]] and Luise Bartholomä Ende, a physiotherapist.<ref>{{Cite web|date=2011-03-17|title=Michael Ende|url=https://michaelende.de/en/author/biography/michael-ende-0|access-date=2021-12-04|website=Michael Ende|language=en}}</ref> In 1935, when Michael was six, the Ende family moved to the "artists' quarter of [[Schwabing]]" in Munich (Haase).{{huh|date=September 2016}} Growing up in this rich artistic and literary environment influenced Ende's later writing.
