== History == Metamora Township was formed from the eastern half of [[Hadley Township, Michigan|Hadley Township]] on 2 April 1838.<ref>[https://migenweb.org/lapeer/Twp/Twp.html History of Each Township and Village in Lapeer County, MI]. MI GenWeb, excerpted from History of Lapeer County, Michigan : with illustrations and biographical sketches of some of its prominent men and pioneers (1884) by H. R. Page. Accessed 15 October 2024.</ref> The name of the township was based on the character Metamora in the very popular 1829 play ''[[Metamora; or, The Last of the Wampanoags]]'', which had a stage run over 60 years.<ref>{{Cite web|url=http://resources.osv.org/explore_learn/document_viewer.php?DocID=2068|title=Metamora, Last of the Wampanoags}}</ref> This play inspired four new Midwestern towns to adopt the name Metamora β [[Metamora, Ohio]] in the 1830s, Metamora Township, Michigan in 1838 after the 1836-37 [[Toledo War]] caused the removal of Metamora from [[Michigan Territory]] to Ohio, [[Metamora, Indiana]] also in 1838, and [[Metamora, Illinois]] in 1845.
