The town is named after a [[Bureau of Indian Affairs|US Indian Service]] Agent [[James McLaughlin (Indian agent)|James McLaughlin]],<ref>{{cite book|author=Federal Writers' Project|author-link=Federal Writers' Project|title=South Dakota place-names, v.1-3 |url=http://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015027015455;view=1up;seq=131 |archive-url=https://archive.today/20161027093032/http://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015027015455;view=1up;seq=131 |url-status=dead |archive-date=October 27, 2016 |year=1940 |publisher=University of South Dakota |page=49 }}</ref> who supervised the [[Standing Rock Sioux Reservation|Standing Rock]] Indian Agency from 1881 to 1895. He moved to [[Washington, D.C.]], where he was Inspector of the Bureau of Indian Affairs and [[United States Department of the Interior|Department of the Interior]]. After McLaughlin's death in 1923, his body was returned here for burial.

In 2015, the McLaughlin School District changed the name of their school's "[[Midget]]" mascot after protests came from [[Little People of America]].
