==Early life== Mastroianni was born in [[Fontana Liri]], a small village in the [[Apennine Mountains|Apennines]] within the [[Lazio]] [[province of Frosinone]], and grew up in [[Turin]] and [[Rome]]. He was the son of Ida (nΓ©e Irolle) and Ottone Mastroianni. Both of his parents were from the nearby town of [[Arpino]].{{sfn|Costantini|1996|p=5}} His father ran a carpentry shop.{{sfn|Rothe|Block|Moritz|1958|p=261}} Mastroianni was a nephew of sculptor [[Umberto Mastroianni]].{{sfn|Hochkofler|2006|p=9}} During [[World War II]], after the division into [[Axis powers|Axis]] and [[Allies of World War II|Allied]] [[Italy]], he was [[Prisoner of war|interned]] in a loosely guarded [[Nazi Germany|German]] [[Prisoner-of-war camp|prison camp]], from which he escaped to hide in [[Venice]].{{sfn|Dewey|1993|p=29}} His brother [[Ruggero Mastroianni]] was a film editor who worked on some of Marcello's films (''[[City of Women]]'', ''[[Ginger and Fred]]''),<ref>{{cite news |last=Sloman |first=Tony |author-link=Anthony Sloman |newspaper=[[The Independent]] |location=[[London]] |title=Obituaries: Ruggero Mastroianni |date=5 October 1996 |url=https://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/obituaries-ruggero-mastroianni-1356818.html|access-date=10 March 2020}}</ref> and appeared alongside Marcello in ''[[Scipione detto anche l'Africano]]'', a spoof of the once popular [[Sword and Sandal]] film genre released in 1971.{{sfn|Hochkofler|2006|p=96}}
