''Maelgwn'' (IPA: [[Help:IPA/Welsh|/mɑːɨlgʊn/]]) in a [[Middle Welsh]] name meaning "Princely Hound". Attested in Latin as {{lang|la|Maglocunus}} in Gildas' {{lang|la|[[De Excidio et Conquestu Britanniae]]}}, it derives from a [[Common Brittonic]] form reconstructed as *''Maglo-kunos'', a [[Compound (linguistics)|compound]] composed of the root *''maglo''- (MW. ''mael'') meaning "prince", attached to *''cun-'' (''cwn''), an old [[oblique case]] root of ''*cū'' (''ci''), meaning "hound, dog".
