In 1860, an [[oil seep]] in the area of [[Duck Creek (Ohio)|Duck Creek]] led to the discovery of oil at a depth of 59 feet, on William Rayley's farm.  The resulting Macksburg Oil Field became one of Ohio's first oil fields.
