==Early life and education==

After attending business school and serving with the [[White Guard (Finland)|Civil Guard]], Törni entered military service in 1938, joining [[Jäger (military)#Finland|Jaeger Battalion 4]] stationed at [[Losevo, Leningrad Oblast|Kiviniemi]]; when the [[Winter War]] began in November 1939, his enlistment was extended and his unit confronted invading Soviet troops at [[Rautu]].{{sfn|Cleverley|2008|pp=5, 7, 14, 20}}
